入管法の体系は非常に複雑で、就労系在留資格ならば、各資格ごとに働ける業務範囲が制限されており、制限された業務範囲を超えて働くと、不法就労にあたります。
身分系在留資格でも、バックグランドによって割り振られる在留資格が異なってきます。例えば、同じ日系２世でも、生まれた時点の背景の違いにより、『日本人の実子』と『定住者』に振り分けられます。
学習系在留資格では、『留学』は、就労許可を容易に得て制限時間内で働けますが、『文化活動』では、制限付きでも就労許可を得るのは割と大変です。

Employment-related residence statuses include “Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services” for general white-collar workers, “Business Manager” for company management, and “Specified Skilled Worker” for occupations such as agriculture, fisheries, factory work, construction, and restaurant services.
Status-based residence categories include “Spouse or Child of Japanese National,” “Long-Term Resident,” “Permanent Resident,” and “Spouse of Permanent Resident.”
Study-related categories include “Student” and “Cultural Activities.”

Japan’s immigration system is highly complex. In the case of employment-related residence statuses, each category limits the types of work that may be performed, and engaging in activities beyond the permitted scope may constitute unauthorized employment.
Even among status-based residence categories, the status granted differs according to an individual’s background. For example, second-generation Japanese descendants with different circumstances at birth may be classified either as a “Biological Child of a Japanese National” or as a “Long-Term Resident.”
With study-related categories, holders of “Student” status can relatively easily obtain permission to work within prescribed limits, whereas obtaining work permission under “Cultural Activities” status is comparatively difficult, even with restrictions.
